Real User Experience and Practical Tips for AcFun (A Site)

Official website: https://www.acfun.cn/

When looking for ACG-related content, I always found the danmaku either messy and pointless, the content mostly reuploaded duplicates, or the atmosphere overly commercial — after scrolling for a while there was no sense of belonging. Then a fellow fan dragged me into AcFun, and only after using it did I discover a completely different otaku ecosystem.

I stumbled into quite a few pitfalls when I first started, so I’ve put them together here to help newcomers avoid them:

  • Don’t just search for trending anime — the homepage recommendations don’t necessarily match your tastes. The sections “New Anime Express”, “Original Otaku Dance” and “Doujin Talk” hide tons of quality content; many gems from niche circles are in there. For example, commentary on obscure retro anime — only here can you find fellow fans’ in-depth analysis;
  • Don’t turn all danmaku permissions on! When I first opened an anime the screen was so full of scrolling comments I couldn’t make out the picture details. I later learned you can turn off top, bottom or scrolling danmaku separately, and even set it to show only comments from users registered for more than 30 days, filtering out the meaningless spam from newcomers;
  • Don’t waste your coins! Many newcomers spend all their coins voting for trending anime in hopes of recommendations, but coins can actually be exchanged for custom keyword-blocking quotas. For example, if you want to block spoilers or words like “love-brain”, spend some coins to unlock the quota and those words will never appear anywhere on the platform — far more useful than voting blindly;
  • Don’t post danmaku carelessly! If you post long rants right after registering, fellow fans will easily think you “don’t know the rules”. Browse the danmaku for two or three days first, follow everyone’s rhythm by discussing plot details or original-work easter eggs, and your comments will fit in much better.

AcFun’s core advantages are really its atmosphere and the originality of its content. Danmaku is genuinely not a “spam machine” but a vehicle for fellow fans to communicate. For example, when watching anime, someone will point out “there’s a translation error in this part” or “in the original work, this character’s setting is like this”. The interactive content with virtual idols is also highly immersive — not the hard-pushed commercial ads you see on other platforms. Many uploaders create content out of a genuine love of ACG, and even niche videos watched by only a few people get thoughtful replies.

There are also several exceptionally useful features rarely seen on similar platforms: for example, the **anime calendar** — no need to remember update times yourself; open it to see all currently airing anime and set reminders; **one-click danmaku masking**, which covers all the comments while you watch so you can focus on the visuals and storyboarding details, then reopen the danmaku afterwards to browse fellow fans’ comments; plus custom blocking rules — not just keywords, you can also block certain types of users or comments, and even set it to show only uploaders’ reply comments, which is super friendly for people who want to watch quietly but occasionally interact.

Compared with similar platforms, AcFun’s atmosphere is genuinely different. Most other platforms are traffic-driven: uploaders need trending tags to gain exposure, much of the content is reuploaded or riding on hype, and the danmaku can easily devolve into mutual flaming over a single dissenting opinion, even escalating into personal attacks. AcFun is more like a “small circle” — everyone comes for fellow fans’ content. Even niche fan-made works can find their audience; the danmaku doesn’t get flooded with irrelevant comments, criticism stays focused on the plot or the characters themselves, and hardly anyone trolls.

There are also a few details to watch when using it: for example, when watching virtual idol content, don’t casually post stiff words like “waifu” — fellow fans will feel it lacks sincerity; discussing the plot or character settings brings you closer. Also, don’t add unfamiliar uploaders as friends at random — many people add friends to sell merchandise or funnel traffic, unless you’re genuinely interested in their content. And don’t overuse gift effects — a screen full of effects while watching anime blocks the picture and disturbs other viewers’ experience. If you really want to support an uploader, just vote for them with coins in the official rankings.

It probably suits people who love otaku culture, want a calm yet resonant community environment, dislike overly commercial atmospheres, enjoy browsing ACG-related content, or are interested in virtual idols. If you’re only looking for high-traffic trending content, or enjoy lively flame wars, AcFun may not be for you — after all, the pace here is slower and leans towards in-depth exchanges between fellow fans, better suited to users who take their time finding content rather than fast-consumption traffic chasers.
