Last week I wanted to catch up on a newly updated Korean drama, but the several sites I browsed either required a membership or loaded halfway and froze like a slideshow, and I nearly resorted to hunting around on pirated cloud drives. Only later did I discover that Dandantu, which quite a few people around me had been looking for, had quietly changed its access rules — after a recent update, it only allows mobile devices to visit.
I only found it after switching devices and searching three times — can it really solve the problem of finding something to watch?
Official website: https://www.dandantu.cc/
At first I searched its domain on my computer, but clicking in either redirected me to other sites or showed a page that could not be accessed; it took trying three different suffixes before I found a reliable entrance. For someone like me who is used to watching shows on my phone while slacking off, it actually fits perfectly with its current mobile-only access rule — no more fiddling with desktop plugins.
To put it plainly, it is a free online video platform with an online cinema as its main focus, offering the latest TV dramas, movies, anime and variety shows. It even covers niche categories such as Korean, Japanese, Hong Kong and Taiwanese dramas, and its Japanese anime collection is quite complete, so there is no need to search several sites separately.
The pitfalls I stumbled into before switching devices
When following The Glory Season 2 earlier, I tried four sites: either I had to pay for an annual membership to watch the full series, or ads kept popping up — one tap and I was redirected to a game download page, and after closing it the page had to reload all over again. I could not get through ten minutes of content in half an hour. In the end it was a link sent by a friend that led me to a place where I could watch directly — the current Dandantu.
I also made a point of going through its other backup URLs: besides the main site, there are https://www.dandantu.vip/, https://www.dandantu.fun and https://www.dandantu.me/, so that if the main site is under maintenance, I can switch straight to a backup instead of searching all over again.
With no registration or login required, is the viewing experience really hassle-free?
That day when I opened the mobile version of Dandantu, there was truly no need to register or enter a phone number — I simply tapped what I wanted to watch and went straight to the playback page. I watched a newly updated Korean drama, selected HD quality, and the loading speed was quite fast with no frame drops; I also did not run into any forced pop-up ads. In this respect it is far better than the free sites I used before.
I also made a point of testing older anime and found Attack on Titan, which I followed years ago — the collection is complete, unlike some sites where a few episodes in the middle are missing and you can only watch clips. Its categories are also clearly organised, so no aimless digging is needed: tap the anime section and you will see popular new series as well as classic older ones, which saves time when searching.
Of course, it is not perfect either. Occasionally an individual resource fails to load, but simply exiting and re-entering sorts it out, without refreshing the whole page.
With mobile-only access, will it affect usability?
I used to prefer watching dramas on my computer, given the bigger screen, but now that it only allows mobile access, I tried watching in landscape mode on my phone, and the experience is actually much the same as on a computer. You can pause at any time, switch out to reply to messages and come back in with the progress kept — quite convenient.
Some friends around me worried whether a mobile-only service would mean slower content updates. After comparing, I found that its update times for newly released dramas are about the same as other platforms — never a day or two later. For instance, a newly updated variety show can be found the same day, with no need to wait for re-uploads.
Actually, for most people who like to follow content on their phones, this rule is just right: no more fretting over desktop compatibility — just open your phone and watch, with no extra software to install and no computer memory taken up.
I have used it for nearly a week without encountering any payment requests; the dramas and anime I wanted to watch were all there, the picture quality is clear enough, and occasional small issues were quickly resolved. Overall, for an ordinary drama follower like me, it is quite practical.
