For people making short videos, game voiceovers, or video post-production, most have fallen into the copyright pit of assets — either being contacted for using a certain sound effect, or failing to find free assets that fit the scene after searching the entire internet. I was editing an outdoor vlog before, spent half an hour looking for forest wind sounds, either the audio quality was muffled or marked as non-commercial, and struggled until dawn without sorting it out, until a friend recommended Freesound, which solved the big problem.

First, clarify your needs

Official website: https://freesound.org/

Don’t start browsing randomly; first figure out whether you want “atmospheric sound effects” or “scene-specific assets” — for example, game developers need the low-frequency resonance of a monster’s growl, documentary editors need bicycle bells in old alleys, and live streamers need background white noise. All three categories can be found on Freesound, so you don’t have to sift through tens of thousands of assets across the entire site.

When I was looking for thunderstorm sound effects before, I entered “thunder rain ambient” in the search bar, and the results included pure rain sounds, those with distant rumbling thunder, and those mixed with frog croaks. Each one can be listened to directly online, and the page also marks the duration, file size, and even sample rate, so you don’t have to download it only to find the audio quality is wrong.

Don’t ignore licensing details

Most assets are under CC0 license, which basically means whether you’re making a personal vlog or a commercial project, you don’t have to pay, nor do you need to credit the source, so there’s no trouble with copyright disputes at all.

A small number of assets are marked with attribution licenses, which is not difficult either — just mention “assets from Freesound” in the end credits or description of your work, it won’t take extra effort and can help you avoid copyright pitfalls.

Time-saving tips for use

The registration process on this site is very simple — just enter an email, no need to fill in a lot of information. After logging in, you can download, share, and even upload your own sound effects. The operation threshold is very low, so even beginners who have just started with sound effects can get started quickly.

When I used it for the first time, I just searched for “ocean wave”, and all the results were WAV format assets with very clear audio quality, without that hollow feeling after compression, leaving enough room for post-production adjustments, so I didn’t have to look for assets elsewhere.

If you want to find sound effects for specific scenes, you can also add the keyword “field recording” when searching. Most of the results are real sounds recorded on-site, such as market stalls’ calls and subway station noise, which are more authentic than synthetic sound effects, making them perfect for documentary-style content.

Who is it for

For indie game developers, this site is particularly valuable. Many developers look for monster sound effects and ambient sounds here, so they don’t have to spend a lot of money on sound engineers, saving a lot of costs. Moreover, all assets are uploaded by community creators, so their quality is mostly guaranteed.

Short video creators can also use it, especially those making outdoor, store-review, or narrative content. Finding a background sound that fits the scene can greatly enhance the video’s immersion, instead of using the monotonous background music provided by the platform.

Of course, this site isn’t omnipotent. For example, if you’re looking for original soundtracks from a specific singer or brand-exclusive sound effects, it won’t cover those. But it can basically meet the basic needs of daily creation.

Now I mostly find sound effect assets for my content here, saving a lot of time searching for assets and not having to worry about copyright issues anymore. It’s a practical resource library worth bookmarking for the long term.
